Sojourner Truth. 1797 - 1883. African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in Swartekill, Ulster County, New York. She was one of the ten or twelve children born to James and Elizabeth Baumfree, Africans captured from the Gold Coast in modern-day Ghana.
